via Inside Social Games - After an initial release on iOS and Android devices, Battle Nations has officially launched on Steam, giving a whole new set of players the chance to get in on the tactical, turn-based combat experience. The game was released in beta on Steam via the platform’s Early Access program earlier this year, but this official launch introduces new content to gamers, as Valve and Z2 have partnered to bring Team Fortress 2 content to the game.

In Battle Nations, players balance the use of resources as they build a base, constructing a barracks to train soldiers, defensive weapons to protect their land, production facilities for resources like stone and logs, storage structures to hold those resources and so on. Players can recruit units with free and premium currency, with units coming in multiple forms, from basic troopers to shock troopers, grenadiers, flame troops, rangers, hornets and more.

During combat, players take turns against the enemy’s army on a battlefield grid. Users tap on one of their units to view their available targets (the selection depends on their distance from the enemy and that unit’s particular skills), and then tap on the enemy unit they’d like to attack (again, this varies depending on the unit’s positioning and skills). Players win resources, including occasional free troops, when they’re victorious in battle, and their troops will level up with skill points automatically after combat.

Players are encouraged to complete missions to progress through the overall story, and player vs. player battles are also available.

Each year, the advances are more impressive, the benefits more far-reaching. All the more reason to continue celebrating the creators and purveyors of technological innovations that affect how we live and do business. Seattle Business magazine salutes the honorees of the 2013 Tech Impact Awards and recognizes the sort of outstanding achievement that informs and inspires even greater leaps forward in the future.

Game developer Z2 (formerly Z2Live) understands that play is something people prefer to do with each other, not with machines. Its family of highly social games allows players to compete and collaborate in real time through their iPhones or iPads, even while on the go.

Through games like the city-building Trade Nations, the jet-fighting Metalstorm and the auto-racing Nitro, players can form communities and share the experience. They can send text messages or voice chat with each other as they play.

As an executive with Microsoft’s Xbox Entertainmnet Network, cofounder Damon Danieli had helped bring these types of features to console and desktop games, aided by fast internet connections. But cofounder and veteran mobile entrepreneur David Bluhm understood that mobile networks were catching up.  Bluhm turned over the CEO’s reins to Lou Fasulo in 2012 and, under Fasulo, Z2 has continued on what Fasulo describes as a path to “developing and publishing some of the industry’s deepest and most engaging mobile titles.”

How to Crush Your Rivals in Battle Nations
via PocketGamer - War! Huh! What is it good for? Find out with our handy guide. Read More ›

    War is hell, soldier.

    Well, not all the time.

I mean, in video game form it’s often rather enjoyable. Shooting up baddies with bloomin’ great cannons and outsmarting your enemy with cunning tactics can be ruddy fun.

Far from being hellish is Z2’s delightful, humour-packed, and downright smashing Battle Nations. That’s why it was my utmost pleasure to dive back into this game to create a beginner’s guide for you.

So, read on for tips on how to win battles, maintain efficiency in your base camp, and to rack up those all-important experience points. Ten-hut!

    Get rid of the ZZZs

In terms of building up your base, it’s a good idea to ensure that there’s a healthy amount of work being carried out by your citizens.

Each building that’s not in use will have a symbol over it with ‘ZZZ’ written inside - you should avoid having any of these if at all possible. Since the game continues without your necessarily being present (and therefore the construction of items takes place even if you’re not playing), time not spent tweaking layouts and battling enemies is time that can be spent making useful materials.

You’ll often need specific types of item to complete story missions - Lemon Cookies from the Bakery is an early example - so getting your best bun merchants on the case as soon as possible is essential. You should also train new troops in your downtime to ensure a healthy supply of cannon fodder.

You should be upgrading your buildings as much as possible, and progressing through the missions to unlock more and more content to expand and improve your base of operations.

As you make improvements to the facilities you have, though, don’t forget to clear the area of raiding forces so that you rack up more experience, more resources, and avoid any penalties that might be incurred for not doing so.
